Resignation of David Williams, Interim Branch Chairman
Cllr David Williams JP has resigned as Interim Chairman of UKIP SW Norfolk Constituency Association.
David was elected to the position of Interim Chairman at an EGM in September 2018, putting himself forward to avoid a motion that the SW Norfolk branch, one of the most successful in the country, be merged into a neighbouring branch for lack of a Chairman.
David first joined UKIP in 2015 when he left the Independent Group on Breckland Council and crossed the floor to sit as a UKIP Councillor. He brought with him 16 years of experience as a Conservative Councillor and 20 years as a Parish Councillor. David went on to stand for UKIP at two Breckland District Council elections.
David stood as the UKIP SW Norfolk PPC for the 2017 General Election, and as the only pro-Brexit candidate on the ballot, managed to beat UKIP's national vote share against what was a difficult political picture nationally.
"The fear of a Labour win caused the UKIP vote to go to the Conservatives. Yet we came third... with leaflets being put through doors by some generous volunteers. I thank everyone for that effort."
David has decided to move on, citing work commitments and other time constraints, to "make it easier for the branch to elect someone new". An EGM will be held next week for Members to elect a new Interim Chairman.
An urgent task for the new Chairman will be to help the branch put forward as many candidates as possible at the local elections in May, and as David says
"To those who are new in standing as a candidate in the upcoming local elections and encouraged to do so by me, I wish them all the best."
"So yes, I am sad but know others will... help their communities and uphold the democratic vote taken in 2016. I wish them all the best in that endeavour. "
The Branch would like to thank David for his service over the past 4 years, and wish him well with his future endeavours.
